Witty, intelligent and uplifting, this book about what it means to be female isn't just for those who are currently going through the menopause- I'm 20 and I love it. Although detailed and thoroughly-researched where necessary, the book leaps confidently between widely differing topics, including medical treatments, analyses of how older women are portrayed in literature, and accounts of the terrific courtesans of the past whose innate sex appeal and character enabled them to continue to fascinate men long after they had lost their youthful looks. The book ends with a convincing and uplifting argument that the clue to happiness lies in one's inner serenity and interest in life reather than in how one appears to others. The writing displays Greer's trademark blend of spirit and erudition. Smashing.
