Amazon.co.uk Review
The word 'metamorphosis' is described in the Oxford Concise Dictionary as meaning: a change of form, (by natural or supernatural means) a change of character, conditions etc. How perfectly this word describes the state of a woman beginning -- or going through -- the trauma of the menopause! Is it me or is it hot in here? by Jenni Murray, should be compulsory reading. Not just for women needing help and advice on the complexities of the menopause, but also for men trying to understand why women are so complex at this time. Marcelle Smith, a Magazine Editor, once observed: " Women are like eggs, they hatch in their forties." Jenni Murray feels that her book is about, "a search for a better understanding of what is happening to us physically, what we can do about it and how we learn to make informed decisions about the best way to act as regards the medical profession, friends, children and partners." Primarily though, she hopes that through sharing our experiences of what we suffer or not, as the case may be, we find some comfort in the fact that we are not alone, that there are various strategies for making ourselves feel better and that these feelings will not go on for ever. Jenni's book covers everything in some depth including: what is the menopause? the pros and cons of HRT, alternatives to HRT, diet and exercise, "old age aint for cissies" some further reading and ends with some useful addresses. It is a marvellous book and very helpful. On a more personal level, my only complaint is that this book wasn't written earlier. Such a lot of pain and heartache could have been avoided and more questions answered. Oh well, better late than never I suppose!--Lynne Unwin.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely read this   February 11, 2010

I read this before I had too many symptoms of the perimenopause and found it excellent for background knowledge and then I read it again months later and underlined bits in red so that I had the references at my fingertips when I went to the doctor's. It is very useful guidance but it has not been updated recently.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and funny   January 4, 2010

I bought this book approx 8 years ago and found it really informative and reassuring with a dash of humour and lots of tips. Before I had read the book, i thought I was suffering from an early onset of dementia as my memory had turned to mush, but I now know that its just a part of the process. I lent that book to a work colleague years ago and it has never been returned-typical! I immediately thought of buying another copy of this book when a friend of mine recently mentioned familiar symptoms.... do I expect to get it back? No!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book   June 22, 2009

A really great book which I found both informative and helpful. So much so infact that I've bought it for a friend and my sister-in-law as well. Forewarned is forearmed!

4 out of 5 stars So it's not just me who asks this question!   April 8, 2009

This is the perfect read for women approaching the menopause, particularly those who were not expecting it just yet and therefore haven't been prepared for the wide-ranging symptoms awaiting including the tedious tsunami of hot flushes.

This book conveniently brings an analysis of treatment approaches together into one easy to read book, yet succeeds in avoiding over-medicalising a perfectly normal life transition. The inclusion of the experiences of real women is especially valuable for those of us feeling isolated and suffering in the midst of a still largely-taboo subject.

It's a comprehensive guide, very well written and includes a welcome touch of humour. I'd also recommend it for baffled husbands and partners to warn them what to expect too!

5 out of 5 stars A balanced account with real women's experiences.   January 30, 2009

I like the fact that whilst this book provides a balanced account of the menopause, it doesn't read like a medical text book. It includes real women's experiences, so you don't feel you're the only one going through hot flushes and sleepless nights etc. It outlines both the good and the bad aspects of going through the menopause, as well as the pros and cons of HRT and natural alternatives. All in all a comprehensive guide to the menopause.
